ADSL has come a long way since 1989. Downstream speeds have migrated from 1.5 Mbps to over 9 Mbps (at a price – line reach decreases) and upstream speeds have improved similarly, to 640 kbps or higher. ADSL chip sets are now mass-produced by several major suppliers. The physical size and power consumption of ADSL transceivers are less than one-half of systems from two years ago. The number of ADSL modems installed around the world will soon exceed one hundred thousand. With five hundred million residential telephone lines in the world today, ADSL will no doubt be on millions of lines in the near future.
